The Turkish Kangal Dog is a large, powerful dog developed to guard livestock against the threat of wolves, bears and jackals.

The breed derives its name from the town and district of Kangal in the easternmost province of the Central Anatolia Region, and in some countries is known as the Anatolian Shepherd Dog.

History

The Turkish Kangal Dog is native to Turkey, where they were bred to guard livestock. They were bred to resemble the size and colour of livestock they defended so predators wouldn’t detect them among the flock. Typically, these predators would be wolves, bears and jackals, and the dogs needed to be willing to confront, physically attack and kill predators if they couldn’t just drive them away. In some countries, this breed is referred to as the Anatolian Shepherd Dog.

Health and common issues

Generally healthy. Responsible breeders will screen for entropion, in which the eyelids invert, which can be surgically corrected.
