The Papillon is a breed of toy spaniel, from France and Belgium. It is famed for its feathered butterfly ears from which it takes its name, being large and fringed, giving them a butterfly wing-like appearance.
These small dogs are dainty and elegant, with a plumed tail, and a long, silky coat typically of white with patches of colour. Papillons are happy, friendly and self-assured dogs which enjoy being sociable. They make excellent family dogs, which enjoy playing with children, and they are also good around dogs, cats and other household pets. Papillons are bright and intelligent dogs, who need mental stimulation to prevent them from getting bored. They will respond well to training and will enjoy learning tricks and can excel in obedience competitions. Papillons dont require lots of exercise but do relish the opportunity to rush around outdoors and stretch their legs. They can adapt to all sorts of homes and owners, as long as they are most firmly at the heart of the household.
History
The Papillon is believed to be one of the oldest toy spaniels, and appears in Renaissance painting form the early 16th Century. They were hugely popular in the royal courts of Europe and were owned by many society ladies including Madame de Pompadour and Queen Marie Antoinette.
