This strong and capable dog was designed as a multi-purpose farm dog for the farms of Switzerland.
Powerful and sturdy, this dog is strikingly beautiful and is distinguished by its thick, silky tricoloured coat, which is black, white and rust. Bernese Mountain Dogs are also blessed with a wonderful nature, being affectionate, fun and devoted to their family, although a young Bernese may be too full on for very young children or the elderly. They are happiest when surrounded by their family and will get along happily with other pets. They enjoy all types of outdoor activities and will do well in agility, herding and obedience competitions. They have a strong herding instinct, so early training to curb the temptation to round up any moving object is highly recommended.
History
The Bernese Mountain Dog takes its name from the Swiss region of Berne, where it was developed as an immensely strong drafting dog to pull the carts of local weavers and farmers. It was also used as a multipurpose farm dog to herd sheep and cattle and guard the farmyards.
