The Beauceron is a large, powerful and intelligent dog, developed to herd sheep.

They are a loyal companion and guardian, and as such, are often used as guard dogs. They can be dominant dogs and do better with an experienced owner who can provide the necessary training to get the best out of this breed. A well-trained and socialised Beauceron can be a wonderful and loyal guardian.

Beauceron dog breed

History

The Beauceron is a French shepherd dog dating back to the Middle Ages whose name is derived from the vast agricultural region southwest of Paris. Over the years, its calm, quiet approach to hunting, made it popular in many different roles from bodyguard, rescuer and mover of livestock. It was also used in the trenches during World War One to penetrate enemy lines.

Health and common issues

Generally healthy. Responsible breeders will screen their breeding stock for health conditions such as hip dysplasia, heart disease, eye problems, and allergies. This breed can experience bloat, a sudden, life-threatening condition where the stomach can twist. Owners should familiarise themselves with the signs of bloat.
