The Basset Fauve de Bretagne is a reddish fawn scent hound originating from Brittany, France.

Small and stocky, with a rough coat, this friendly little dog is energetic and fast for its size. Although an excellent hunter that requires plenty of exercise, this dog also makes an excellent companion dog and has a cheerful nature and willingness to please. As with all hounds, training is recommended to get the best from the breed – left to its own devices it can get up to mischief! This breed gets on well with children and other pets. For the owner that has plenty of time to exercise this energetic dog, they will be rewarded with a loving and cheerful addition to the family.

Basset Fauve de Bretagne

History

This breed first appeared in Brittany, France during the 1800s. It was developed from the larger and now extinct Grand Fauve de Bretagne, to hunt smaller game. It was close to extinction after the Second World War and was on the Kennel Club’s rare breed register until 2007.

Health and common issues

Generally healthy. Responsible breeders screen their stock for health concerns such as progressive retinal atrophy (PRA), epilepsy, cardiomyopathies, skin allergies and age-related thyroid issues.
