The Basset Bleu de Gascogne is a short-legged hound from South West France. The ‘bleu in its name refers to the blue mottled markings on its coat.
Typically friendly and outgoing, this breed is well-suited to active families, and it will relish long walks and plenty of playtime. That being said, this dog will happily flop once home and will enjoy time spent in the company of its owners. As with all scent hounds, a secure garden is a must and training is recommended. As a pack dog, the Basset Bleu enjoys the company of other dogs and will get on well with other companion animals too if it is brought up with them.
History
Originating in the Middle Ages, this ancient breed comes from the region of Gascony in southwest France, where it was bred down from the larger Grand Bleu de Gascogne to hunt small game such as rabbits. Very nearly extinct in the early 19th century, the breed is still rare and is not often seen outside of France.
