The Lagotto Romagnolo is a small to medium-sized gundog, originating in the Romagne district of northern Italy, whose name in local dialect literally translates as ‘curly coated duck retriever’.

This sturdy dog was originally used to retrieve waterfowl from the marshland where it originated but today is more generally used as a truffle hunter due to its acute scenting powers.

History

The Lagotto Romagnolo dates back to sixteenth-century Italy. It originated in the lowlands and marshlands of the eastern part of the Romagne region of northern Italy, where it was used as a water retriever. After the drainage of large areas of wetland habitat in its area of origin, it was used instead as a truffle hunter.

Health and common issues

Generally healthy. The Lagotto Romagnolo is generally a healthy breed although may still be prone to a number of health conditions including juvenile epilepsy, storage disease and hip and elbow dysplasia.
