The Kuvasz is a large dog originating in Hungary where it was developed to guard livestock. It is an imposing and eye-catching dog, with a large muscular frame covered with a thick snowy white coat.

Despite their size and power, they are remarkably nimble and quick dogs. Similar to the other Hungarian herding dogs, they are an intelligent and loyal breed which forms close bonds with their owners. They make very good guard dogs, naturally protective of their owners and territory, and naturally distrustful of strangers. Their loyalty to their owners extends to the children of the household, and with good early socialisation, they will be gentle and protective to even the smallest of children. The Kuvasz is a highly active dog and requires a lot of outdoor exercise and space to run. They can also be strong-willed and obstinate, and this combined with their strong guarding instincts may be too challenging for a novice owner. Early socialisation and puppy training classes are a must for the Kuvasz puppy and a great deal of patience and perseverance will be required to get the best from this breed. Given the right environment, care and owner, this breed can be a wonderful companion that is extremely devoted to its family.

History

The Kuvasz originates from the plains of Hungary. They are believed to descend from similar dogs which were taken there by the Magyars as guard dogs to protect their stock from predators.

Health and common issues

Generally healthy. The Kuvasz is generally a healthy breed. They may however still be prone to a number of health conditions including elbow and hip dysplasia, autoimmune thyroiditis, luxating patella, cardiac conditions and progressive retinal atrophy. As a large-chested breed, it can also experience bloat, a sudden, life-threatening condition where the stomach can twist. Owners should familiarise themselves with the signs of bloat.
