The Italian Spinone is a strong, all-purpose hunting dog which is immensely popular in its home country of Italy.
They are solidly built, designed for endurance hunting over rough ground and in water, and are characterised by their dense, partially wiry coat with distinctive shaggy eyebrows, moustache and beard. They come in a variety of colours and patterns, predominantly shades of oranges and browns with white markings. They have a super temperament: patient, gentle and devoted, and fit well into family life. They are excellent companions to children and get on well with other dogs and household pets too. Spinones often seem to have human-like ways and a good sense of humour, all of which add to their endearing qualities. Spinones require lots of exercise, up to two hours a day, and enjoy being involved in agility, flyball, rally and obedience, which help challenge this clever breed. Spinones are active and bright dogs that require an owner that can match their intelligence and activity level. Those that can, will be rewarded with a loving and devoted companion.
History
The Italian Spinone’s heritage is largely unclear. Rough-haired pointers were certainly present in Italy in the 15th Century, from which this dog is likely to have descended. The name Spinone refers to pino the thorny undergrowth found in North West Italy, the region where this breed was developed as an all-purpose hunter that could withstand rough terrain and different weather conditions.
