The German Pinscher is a medium-sized dog originating in Germany and is the ancestor of the Dobermann and the Miniature Pinscher.

This no-frills dog, has a sleek and unfussy silhouette, with a short, smooth coat of either dark reddish brown or black-and-tan. They are athletic, muscular and agile dogs with a truly effortless gait. The German Pinscher is a confident, energetic and intelligent dog and can make a loving and devoted companion. As a family dog, they do better with older children, being too assertive for younger children, and due to their strong hunting instincts, they will chase anything making them unsuitable to be housed with cats or other small household pets. German Pinscher is a strong-willed breed which benefits from consistent training and socialisation and will rule the roost given the chance. However, this is a breed that learns fast and will do well in the right hands. They are also naturally suspicious of strangers, and whilst this makes them excellent guard dogs, they can exhibit aggressive behaviour. Again, will socialisation from a young age they will be more well-rounded and accepting of unfamiliar people. These are strong, capable dogs, which will thrive on plenty of exercise, company and training.

History

The German Pinscher, sometimes called the Standard Pinscher is of original pinscher from which the larger Dobermann and the smaller Miniature Pinscher were developed. The word pinscher means ‘to bite’ or ‘to grip’, an apt name for a breed which was developed to hunt and kill rats and other vermin.
