The Boxer is an easily recognisable breed, with a strong, muscular body and distinct square-shaped head, wrinkled brow, undershot jaw and blunt muzzle. They are intelligent and playful dogs, with a high need for human companionship and exercise.
Their fun-loving nature means that they thrive in the heart of an active family, and they are known to be particularly tolerant with children, whose company they will enjoy. They show exceptional loyalty to their owners and are fearless protectors of their families. The Boxers coat is short and glossy and requires very little coat maintenance, just requiring a quick rub down with a rubber curry brush or grooming mitt. In winter they may feel the cold and may require extra protection, whereas in the summer they may need extra help to ensure that they dont overheat.
History
The Boxer originated from a descendant of the Bullenbeisser (meaning bull biter), a German bulldog which was used to hunt bear, boar and deer in the 19th century, as well as for bear and bull baiting. It is thought that this breed was crossed with the British Bulldog, providing the basis for the modern-day Boxer.
