This ancient breed of sheepdog is distinguished by its show-stopping heavy coat which forms naturally into mats.

Their matted coat provides insulation from the extreme cold of the Italian Alps, from where it originates, as well as providing protection from wild predators. The Bergamasco has a sociable and loving nature, and a desire to please its owner. They are highly intelligent and independent but also easily trainable, and once they understand what is expected of them, they will happily comply. Bergamascos have plenty of energy and will enjoy almost any other activity that involves their owner, to whom they will be loyally devoted.

History

This Bergamasco has been associated with the Italian town of Bergamo near Milan for centuries, where it was used to move and guard sheep across the rocky slopes of the Italian Alps. Its distinctive coat protected it from the extreme cold of the Alps and also as a shield against predators looking to feast on stray sheep.
