The Chartreux is a relatively rare breed of cat originating in France. It is an attractive cat of solid proportions characterised by a dense water-repellent coat of rich blue-grey and large orange or copper-coloured eyes.
It has a relatively placid nature and is affectionate and thoughtful, and rarely makes any vocal noises.
Description and Characteristics
The Chartreux is a handsome cat, with a large sturdy body. Although well-built, the Chartreux is extremely agile and subtle and was coveted in France for its hunting prowess. It has a broad rounded head and the structure of their heads and the tapering of their muzzle gives them a sweet, smiling expression. Its eyes are rounded and alert, and range from copper to gold. Its most amazing feature is perhaps its extremely dense, water-repellent coat which has a slightly woolly texture and comes in all shades of blue-grey, from ash to slate, with the tips a shimmering silver.
The Chartreux is an intelligent and quiet cat, which appears thoughtful and observant. They rarely vocalise and make charming and affectionate companions. They are generally good with children and other animals, although may choose to bond closely to one particular member of the household.
Health and common issues
Chartreux are generally healthy cats with an average lifespan of 10 to 15 years. There have been occasional reports of patellar luxation in the breed.
