The Asian cat is one of a number of cats of Burmese type that come with different coat colours and patterns to that of the Burmese. Amongst this Asian Group are also the Burmilla cat (a shaded variety of the Asian cat) and the Tiffanie (a semi-longhaired variety of the Asian cat).
The Asian shares many of the same characteristics as that of the Burmese, being friendly, sociable and chatty.
Description and Characteristics
The Asian cat is a medium-sized cat with a slender, lithe and muscular body which is heavier than its appearance indicates. Their head is rounded with medium-sized ears and large wide-set eyes which range from green to yellow. Their coat is fine and glossy and lies close to the skin, and comes in a variety of colours and patterns. According to their coat, the Asian is classified into four different categories: the Asian Self (including the Bombay, which is a black Asian Self), the Asian Tabby, the Asian Smoke and the Burmilla (which is a shaded Asian).
Asian cats are very friendly and sociable cats which form strong bonds with their owners. They love to play and explore and are particularly bright, thriving on interactive games and playtime with their owners and can also be trained successfully to retrieve toys. Asian cats tend to be vocal and will happily chat with owners if spoken to directly. They may pick up on stress, so are best suited to calm homes. With the right environment, Asians are easy-going and happy companions.
Health and common issues
Asian cats are generally healthy with an average lifespan of 10 to 15 years. Polycystic kidney disease (PKD) and progressive retinal atrophy (PRA) have been reported in the breed.
