The Lowchen or Little Lion Dog is a small toy dog with a German name but French origins. These small dogs are famed for their traditional lion clip of shaved hindquarters, with plumed tails and a mane of hair over their neck and shoulders.
Their coat comes in several colours and colour combinations, including creams, gold, silver and black, and where not clipped, it is long, silky, soft and flowing. Lowchen have sturdy little bodies and relatively wide muzzles, broad skulls, pendulant ears and bright round eyes. Lowchen are friendly, happy little dogs, which love everyone, making them ideal companion pets. They love attention and make super, playful and reliable companions for children. They can be excitable and vocal and can make good watchdogs, although strangers will invariably be greeted with friendly excitement. These dogs adapt to a variety of homes and can make wonderful companions for a variety of owners.
History
The origins of the Lowchen are widely disputed, although dogs of this type have been found in many European countries dating back to the 16th century. They have a German name but are most likely to have developed in France and are part of the Bichon family of dogs. They were favourites amongst royalty and aristocracy, where they were adored lapdogs. It is believed that they were clipped and groomed to resemble lions as a symbol of strength, power and status. Their exposed skin was also warm, turning this little dogs into living hot water bottles.
