The Braque d’Auvergne is a breed of gundog originating in the mountainous area of Cantal, in the province of Auvergne in the mid-south of France.
They are strong, tall dogs standing up to 60 cm tall, and bear a striking resemblance to the modern German Shorthaired Pointer and the English Pointer. They have long muscular limbs, a large head, long ears and pendulous lips. Their coat is short, glossy and white with black spotting and ticking across the body and legs. The head and ears are predominantly black. The Auvergne is a natural hunter and is lively and athletic, and relishes long walks in the countryside with plenty of opportunities to exercise its body, nose and its mind. They are naturally sensitive and obedient, with a willingness to please which makes them very easy to train. They also have a sweet nature and are gentle and loving with their humans, making them very good family dogs. They also get along well with other dogs and will do well with other pets with good early socialisation and careful introductions. These dependable dogs make super companions for active owners and families.
History
Native to France, the Braque dAuvergne has been present in the Cantal region for more than two centuries where it was developed as a hunting and pointing dog. It is possibly descending from the Spanish pointers and hunting hounds of the time. It has been recognised in France as a gundog breed since 1955 and more recently, in 2016, the UK Kennel Club also classified the breed.
