The Azawakh takes its name from the Azawakh Valley in the Sahara desert where it lived amongst the nomadic tribes. Used to hunt gazelle as part of a pack, this elegant-looking dog is known for its agility, endurance and lightning speed, and is able to reach speeds of up to 40 mph (65 km/h).

In appearance, the Azawakh is lean and leggy, with prominent hip bones and muscles. It has a sensitive nature and requires gentle handling at all times. With those it trusts, the Azawakh will be a loyal and loving lap dog, however, around new people, it can be rather aloof. As a sighthound, they will look to chase anything that moves, and therefore this breed requires experienced owners who are prepared to put in the time to train and socialise this graceful animal.

History

Azawakh breed

The Azawakh is from the Azawaky Valley in Africa, where it lived with the tribes of the Sahara Desert. They were used as pack animals to hunt gazelle and other prey, as well as acting as guard dogs to chase off predators. The Azawakh was also prized for its beauty, and historically it was valued by many in much the same way as the Arabian horse.
