The Affenpinscher is a small, rough-coated and sturdy dog with a mischievous monkey-like expression and a character to match.

Charming, fun-loving and confident, this lively little breed makes a great companion, which is both loyal and affectionate. It is often said that the Affenpinscher ends up owning you and not the other way around! Their lively personality means that they can get bored easily and training needs to be varied and consistent. They may also be territorial and can be wary of strangers.

History

small black Affenpinscher

Of German origin, it is believed that the Affenpinscher dates back to the 17th century and was created to be a ratter, removing vermin from farmlands. After both world wars, the breed was nearly wiped out but today is a thriving a popular breed.

Health and common issues

Generally healthy. Responsible breeders will screen for health conditions such as luxating patella, heart anomalies, vision problems, and hip dysplasia. Like other shorter-faced breeds, Affenpinschers can experience breathing problems, especially in hot weather.
