The Pomeranian, affectionately referred to as the ‘Pom’, is a small-sized toy dog, descended from the larger German Spit, and named after the Pomerania region in north-west Poland and north-east Germany.

Pomeranians are tiny yet sturdy dogs with delightful foxy faces, bright eyes and an abundant double coat. They have a thick ruff around their chest and shoulders and a plumed tail that curls over their back. They come in a wide variety of colours, although are most often commonly seen in orange or red, or cream/white. These little dogs are the ideal companion. They are very friendly, loving and full of fun, and don’t require much exercise. They are perfect companions for older people and make a super addition to the family household. They get on well with children and most other dogs, although are happy to make their presence known with much larger breeds. These are smart and fun little dogs, who get great joy from playing games with their owners and being at the centre of their attention and devotion. They can also be occasionally stubborn and wilful and may get into the habit of barking without good early training. Nevertheless, these are super companions for the owner who wants an energetic dog around the home, that doesn’t require much outdoor exercise.

History

The Pomeranian was bred down from the German Spitz to be a toy dog or lapdog. It gained huge popularity after becoming a favourite of Queen Victoria whose dogs were exhibited at dog shows in London.

Health and common issues

Generally healthy. Pomeranians are generally healthy dogs with a life expectancy of 12–16 years. They can still be prone to a number of conditions including luxating patellas, hypothyroidism, collapsing tracheas, congestive heart failure, seizures, and alopecia X (black skin disease). (Breed watch – category 2 on Kennel Club)
