The Havanese is the national dog of Cuba and a member of the Bichon family. It is famed for its long coat which has the feel of silk and is often referred to as the Havana Silk Dog.
The Havanese is a toy breed, with a small but sturdy body and a distinctive springy gait. The coat is abundant, long, silky and very lightweight, designed to act as a sunshade and means to keep cool on hot days. As such, the Havanese need to be protected from the cold. Originally known for their white coats, Havanese now come in a range of colours, including shades of creams, gold and brown. The Havanese is considered an ideal family pet and a true companion dog. They become very attached to their owners and are not suited to be alone all day. They will want to be in the company of their humans, providing a fun and lively companion, always at the heart of the action. Being gentle, friendly and playful, they are excellent with children and other household pets. Though it enjoys outdoor activity, it doesnt require much exercise, preferring short, brisk walks and playtime at home. prefers being inside with its owner. This is a dog that can thrive in all sorts of homes. As long as they are with their owners and on the receiving end of lots of attention, they are happy.
History
The Havanese is the national dog of Cuba and member of the Bichon family of dogs. It is thought to have arrived in Cuba with Spanish or Italian traders. The breed became more widely known when after the Cuban Revolution when many people fled to the USA taking their dogs with them.
