The Black and Tan Coonhound is a scent hound which was developed in North America to hunt racoon (hence the derivative in the breed’s name). They are recognisable by their black coat with tan accents, expressive eyes and long velvety ears.

They are large and strong hounds, with a huge amount of stamina and courage, who love getting outdoors with their human companions. They are super easygoing and friendly, and when not enjoying outdoor activities, they can be found lounging around in the company of their family. As with all hounds, if they get on the scent of something they are gone, so a secure garden and a lead when walking is a must.

History

The origins of the Black and Tan Coonhound can be dated back to the early colonial dogs taken from England to North America in the 17th century. It is thought that this breed is a variety of Foxhound, with traces of Pointer, Setter and Bloodhound. It was primarily developed to track racoon by scent. They would trail the racoon and hold it at bay whilst it hid up a tree. Their strength and stamina also made them useful for hunting large prey such as deer, wild boar, bears and mountain lion.

Health and common issues

Generally healthy. Responsible breeders will screen breeding stock for health conditions such as hip dysplasia, cataracts, and thyroid issues.
