The Basset Hound is a short-legged, low-slung scent hound originating in France. It is recognisable for its large, domed head and extremely long velvety ears, mournful eyes and wrinkly brow.
Despite being short-legged, this breed is strong and has heaps of stamina. It also has incredible scenting ability and, as such, will require a well-fenced garden to prevent escapes, together with firm and consistent training. This breed can also be notoriously stubborn but early training will be hugely beneficial. They are also wonderful placid family dogs, enjoying the company of children and animals, and although not demonstrative with their affections, they are always loyal and agreeable.
History
This breed takes its name from the French word basset which means low-set. They originated in the region of Artois and Flanders in France during the Middle Ages, where they were used as badger dogs. They made their way to Britain after the Norman invasion in 1066 and get mentioned by Shakespeare in the 16th century when they were used in hunting packs.
