The Australian Silky Terrier is, as the name suggests, a small terrier with a long silky coat. Although a toy dog, the Silky is much more than a little lap dog.
It has a bright, energetic nature and although not requiring a huge amount of exercise, it loves rushing around the garden or in the fields and will enjoy long walks. This breed is very friendly and makes an excellent companion. It will also do well with children if raised alongside them, although may need extra training to live alongside cats and other small animals. Daily grooming is essential to keep the Silkys coat looking beautiful and tangle-free. This independent little character is affectionate and loyal, with a ready bark.
History
This breed was developed in the 19th century by crossing the Australian Terrier with the Yorkshire terrier. It is thought to have been bred primarily as a companion animal, although it has typical terrier instincts and has been used for hunting and killing rodents and snakes.
