The Anatolian Shepherd Dog was developed to guard livestock in Turkey against the threat of wolves, bears and jackals. Protective by nature, this dog will look out for its family, including children, making it a friendly loyal companion.
However, their protective nature can also make them territorial and possibly aggressive to other dogs. In addition, without sufficient training, they will also chase and hunt other pets and animals. The Anatolian can also be stubborn, and this together with its power and strength, means that they are best suited to experienced dog owners who have the time to dedicate to training and exercise. For the owner that is prepared to put in the work, you will be rewarded with a loyal guardian.
History
The Anatolian Shepherd Dog is native to Turkey, where they were bred to guard livestock. They were bred to resemble the size and colour of livestock they defended so predators wouldnt detect them among the flock. This breed is also referred to as the Kangal Shepherd or Turkish Kangal Dog.
